Pray for Us
we no longer live
in the magic land
of Puff, the Dragon,
where imagination
could still rescue us
from ourselves.
we live instead
in harsher lands—
of war and poverty,
violence and hate,
selfishness
and insincerity.
we carried ourselves here
despite the warnings,
despite the signs,
despite the lessons
left behind
by those who came before.
all the superheroes
removed their masks,
shed their costumes,
and fed them
to public bonfires
worthy of 1984.
the smoke rose,
the crowds cheered,
and no one asked
who would save us now.
we smothered God
into nonexistence,
banished the lesser gods,
and elevated new ones—
congressional gods,
corporate gods,
celebrity gods—
all teaching us
the fine art
of political indifference.
using platforms of deceit,
we stole hate
from the devil,
repackaged it
into something
even more sinister,
then fed it
to the willing,
increasing their appetite
for outrage,
their addiction
to division,
their loss
of self.
the golden goose
was strangled
in its sleep.
its remains
were ground into leaflets
and distributed
to anyone hungry enough
to believe
they were being fed.
truth became negotiable.
compassion
became weakness.
wisdom
became a liability.
and ignorance,
once embarrassed
by its own reflection,
learned to celebrate itself.
pray for us,
if you can still find
someone willing
to listen.
if not,
stand beside Lucifer
and watch
the blue skies
turn dark red,
while we explain
to ourselves
that everything
is proceeding
according to plan.
